Job Description

Nursery Chef

Role Brief

To work as a chef providing high quality, seasonal and home-made meals for young children within the nursery budget following the two-week menu using fresh ingredients and meeting all the nutritional requirements of the nursery.

Administration

  • To complete all documentation in compliance with the Food Standards Agency ‘Safer Food Better Business for Caterers’ pack.
  • To complete daily checks, cleaning records & SFBB diary every day.
  • Ensure you remain up to date with all relevant current legislation and government guidelines.

 

Communication

  • Liaise between the Room staff and the Nursery Manager for changes to the daily dietary requirements.
  • To comply with the policies of the nursery as laid out in the Policy and procedure folder.
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with colleagues and other key people in Naturally Learning.
  • Provide feedback to the Head Chef regarding the menu/recipes/ideas.
  • To attend in-service training courses and meetings as required.

 

Safeguarding

  • Ensure you have an up-to-date DBS.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and families.
  • To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is obtained as part of the job.

 

Training

  • To have received training in Food Hygiene to at least level 2.
  • To have received Allergy Awareness training.
  • Attend Statutory Training; Safeguarding Level 2 & Ethos training
  • Completed a Paediatric First Aid course

 

 

Finance

  • To maintain a stock control system and submit the weekly food orders as agreed with the Head Chef.
  •  To be able to work within the allocated budget, taking responsibility for food ordering.
  • Monitor food wastage and ensure that levels are always maintained at a minimum.

 

Daily Duties

  • To prepare and cook a healthy, balanced meals suitable for all children, including all dietary requirements, promoting healthy eating and a positive attitude to nutrition whilst adhering to all relevant policy and legislation.
  • To organise and maintain the nursery kitchen to a hygienic and consistently high standard and in line with Naturally Learning philosophy and policy.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the safe storage of ingredients using the date dot system of marking.
  • To ensure that you are fully aware of the specific dietary needs of the children including allergies and intolerances to particular foods.
  • To promote healthy eating, recognising different cultures, festivals, celebrations and preferences and offer a balanced diet to meet those needs.
  • To support and assist the nursery team to deliver effective and appropriate food related activities.
  • To ensure mealtimes are friendly, relaxed occasions where all staff sit and eat with the children.
  • To involve and liaise with parents regarding their children’s eating plan where special requirements are needed.
  • Assist with all aspects of catering and dining within the nursery and consistently exhibit a flexible, positive and co-operative attitude in line with the Naturally Learning philosophy.
  • To assist with nursery laundry and general nursery cleaning where/when required.

 

 

Health & Safety 

  • To maintain a clean kitchen and equipment.
  • To be able to identify health and safety issues with all the kitchen and serving areas and take appropriate action where necessary.
  • To always adhere to COSHH guidelines.

Full-time, 37.5 hours over 5 days (Monday - Friday)
